Dear Children Rising family,
My fellow board members and the entire staff are glad to invite you to join us on February 7 to welcome Marshelle A. Wilburn to Children Rising.
Marshelle has walked alongside Bay Area children and families for more than 20 years. She’s an educator, community leader, writer, and speaker who helps people act with care and purpose—so every child and family feels valued.
I asked Marshelle what draws her to this work. She described children’s joy in being “seen, heard, known, and loved.”
At Children Rising, it’s always about the children. Each child is nurtured in a circle of care—receiving one-on-one reading and math support from caring volunteers, plus encouragement for their family.
Marshelle’s love for Oakland and the East Bay runs deep. She is a parent whose children thrived in Oakland schools. Rooted in this community, she’s beginning with a listening-first approach—eager to learn from tutors, school partners, and families.
Marshelle shared with us, “I’m grateful to lead Children Rising forward with care, integrity, and a deep focus on children.”
My fellow board members, the entire staff, and I can’t wait for you to meet her. Thank you.
With gratitude,
Glynis Mason, Board Chair
